About Renal Associates of Montgomery, PC

Meet Our Caring Staff

Renal Associates of Montgomery, PC was established in 1976 with the primary focus of care in dialysis and chronic kidney disease. We currently have five physicians, four nurse practitioners and one Physicians Assistant.

Dr. Robert B. Hoit, Jr.

Dr. Robert B. Hoit, Jr completed undergraduate studies at Valdosta State College, earned his M.D. at Medical College of Georgia, and completed Internal Medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, TX while in the US Air Force. 

He served in the US Air Force for nine years prior to joining Renal Associates in 1988. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine with UAB training Internal Medicine resident physicians since 1988. 

He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He is married with one child and two grandchildren.

Dr. Melanie H. Halvorson

Dr. Melanie H. Halvorson is a Montgomery native having graduated from Auburn University, earned her M.D. at UAB School of Medicine (cum laude), and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at University of Virginia and Nephrology fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia.

She worked in two private practices in South Carolina and Georgia before settling back in Montgomery at Renal Associates in 1996. She is a Clinical Instructor of Medicine with UAB training Internal Medicine resident physicians since 1997.

She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. She is married with one child.

Dr. Rodney T. Smith 

Dr. Rodney T. Smith is a native of Marion, Alabama having graduated from the University Of Alabama, earned his M.D. at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, and completed Internal Medicine Residency at the UAB Montgomery Internal Medicine Residency Program and Nephrology fellowship at UAB.

He joined Renal Associates in 2001. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor with UAB training Internal Medicine resident physicians.

He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He is married with one child.

Dr. Kim R. McGlothan

Dr. Kim R. McGlothan completed her M.D. at the University of Tennessee, as well as her Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology fellowship. 

She was an occupational therapist in Baltimore, MD, prior to going to medical school. She joined Renal Associates in 2012.

She has one child.

Dr. Elizabeth Chua

Dr. Elizabeth Chua is a native of Philippines who earned her medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the New York Medical College. She completed her Nephrology Fellowship at the New York Medical College as well as a fellowship in Transplant Nephrology at the Medical University of South Carolina.  Dr. Chua is board certified in Internal Medicine and in Nephrology.  She is also a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Transplantation.

Dr. Chua has been caring for nephrology patients since 2001, including chronic kidney disease, dialysis and transplantation.  She has interest in teaching and research.  She co-authored case reports and published articles in the field of Nephrology and Transplantation.
 
Dr. Chua is married with two children.

Dr. William L. McGuffin, Jr. (in memoriam)

Dr. William L. McGuffin, Jr. completed undergraduate studies at Georgia Tech with honors, earned his M.D. from Duke University with highest honors, and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Massachusetts General and Nephrology fellowship at Duke.

He held Assistant Professor position at UAB and the University of Texas Medical School in Houston before joining Renal Associates in 1981. He has also been a Clinical Associate Professor with UAB training Internal Medicine resident physicians since 1981.

He was board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He was married with five children and three grandchildren.  He passed away on September 17, 2018.

Serving You Close to Home

We take care of patients in eight hospitals – Baptist Medical Center South, Baptist Medical Center East, Prattville Baptist, Jackson Hospital, Noland Long Term Care, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, L.V. Stabler Hospital, and Troy Regional Medical Center.

We also see patients in nine dialysis centers – four in Montgomery, one in Prattville, one in Troy, one in Greenville, one in Tallassee, and one in Brundidge. We are medical directors in these centers to provide medical oversight.

We also see clinic patients in our primary location in Montgomery on Woodmere Boulevard.
